Conspiracy theorists would have you believe that there is some diabolical plan that the Freemasons have to control the world. Apparently the simple fact that powerful men have belonged to the fraternity throughout history is evidence enough.
At first look, one would have to agree that there must be something about the Masonic fraternity. There have been 18 past Presidents of the United States that were Master Masons. Many of the founders of our nation were also Masons, including Benjamin Franklin. Add to this numerous Captains of Industry including Henry Ford, and you can see why this theory can be made. Yes, I agree, all of these men were powerful in their own ways.
The problem, however, lies in the age old question what came first, the chicken or the egg. By this I simply mean, does Freemasonry make these men powerful, or does Freemasonry attract such men because of what it represents. I submit it is the latter.
I would suggest that we can all agree that the men I have listed were brilliant in some way. They all impacted our nation, and mankind in general. So what is it then that these men share, and is common within the masonic community. I believe the answer is simple. It is the desire to improve oneself and those around us!
In fact, this is one of the basic goals of Freemasonry. To take good men and make them better! Each of the men I listed were really no different than other men, except they were driven. They were willing to push themselves beyond what others were. Let’s face it, creating a nation was a challenge that was essentially doomed for failure. They were going up against a well organized army, with nothing but a vision. Yet, through perseverance they won out. It was their belief in improvement, not only for themselves but a nation, that became reality.
Freemasonry offers this to those that have the same belief. Perhaps your goal is not to create a nation, but to maybe simply become a better family man. The same rules apply! Rules, taught within the masonic bodies, that allows this type of growth.
So, to those that say that Freemasons want to control the world, I am sorry to disappoint but this is simply not the case. Freemasons, the world over do however, wish to make the world a better place. Even if it is one family at a time!

I just got home. Thanks to all my brethren who were able to be there tonight as I was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. What an amazing evening!
Yes, I am a Master Mason.
Dear online-informed conspiracy theorists:
Any group claiming to be the infamous Illuminati does not coexist with or within the Freemasons, and never did. It is true that there were a few lines intertwined here and there - but if you’re a regular follower of my blog, you will know that the Freemasons do not represent outside entities.
Who are the Illuminati? It is more politically correct to ask ‘who WERE the Illuminati?’. The word ‘Illuminati’ is Latin for ‘Enlightened One’ or ‘Illuminated One’. If you read Dan Brown you’d believe that the ‘original’ Illuminati were scientists trying to prove the existence of God through equations. It is true that the Catholic Church persecuted these men and made examples of them, but they did not find asylum within Freemasonry. All of this took place during the mid-1600s, long before Freemasonry was an organized fraternity. The Freemasons of the time were few and far between, and the Catholic Monarchs of France and Italy wanted them all off the continent. So you see, Freemasons were on the run as well, and therefore could not have possibly provided adequate asylum for these men.
The most officially recognized source of the Illuminati were the Bavarian Illuminati. 18th century aristocrats that believed in society being governed by a class made up of ‘the best and the brightest’. As suspiciously familiar this description may sound in modern terms - you can safely sleep knowing that aristocratic groups have been influencing politics since ancient Greece, and the Illuminati were no special exception. They were not Freemasons. They were not Knights Templar. They were certainly not wise, else they would have been able to maintain their power. Actually, they were politically and legally banned as an organization very soon after they were founded. They had no secret teachings, no moral code, and no plot to one day rule the world. There is absolutely no documented proof, and unfortunately, proof is what makes the legal system spin. Could they have survived? Could they be plotting world domination through the implementation of a one-world government? Sure. But in such a case, it may also be possible that a man could walk on water (could Christ have been the first member of the X-Men? Haha!), or perhaps our government is in league with Alien beings bent on colonization. You’ll have to forgive me, I just finished watching an episode of X-Files. I do love anything with an ‘X’ in the title. However, none of these Illuminati traits legitimately point to wrong doings within Freemasonry.
The Freemasons are every day men, like you and I. We work jobs, we eat at McDonalds, we bowl on wednesday nights. One thing we don’t do is meet for the purpose of deciding the fate of the world. We have enough problems keeping track of which Brother is supposed to pay for the coffee and donuts after a Lodge meeting. Yes, Stephen Harper, Barack Obama and many other world leaders and influential people are and have been Freemasons. Does this prove that Masonry is a Satanic Cult bent on enslaving the Earth through means of the ‘New World Order’? Or is it just further proof that Masonry only accepts and propels men of great moral character to discover new knowledge, to embrace brotherly love, and to be better friends, husbands, fathers and citizens? Do you know a Mason? Talk to him, and decide for yourself. I have a feeling his kindness will inspire you.
Love from above,
Your brother in blood and spirit.
